Our Values

JCI is rooted in Jewish tradition, and we use Jewish values to guide our actions and make important decisions. These values are grounded in the practice of Mussar (מוּסָר), a Jewish ethical and spiritual discipline focused on developing character (middot), cultivating virtue, and living a life of moral integrity. (The Hebrew word mussar means instruction, discipline, or moral guidance.)

We seek projects, partners, and funders who share our values.

What it means to us: Recognizing that the Jewish people are one vibrant interconnected community worldwide, with a shared history, heritage, and future, and a deep commitment to a secure, democratic Jewish homeland, and safe environments, worldwide, for the Jewish people.

How we apply it at JCI: We strengthen Jewish identity and foster connection across generations and communities, across Israel and the Diaspora, through arts, culture, and media that celebrate the richness, diversity, and continuity of Jewish life.

(Not technically a mussar value but a foundational and guiding principle for everything JCI does.)

What it means to us: Safeguarding and preserving life and health above all else.

How we apply it at JCI: Jewish creativity nurtures the spirit, strengthens resilience, combats isolation, and helps individuals and communities find meaning in times of challenge and change.By enriching human lives and fostering connection, the arts contribute to the well-being and flourishing of people and communities. JCI values artistic and cultural work that enriches lives, supports well-being, and affirms the inherent worth of every human life.

What it means to us: Being honest and deliberate, with thoughtful attention in words and actions.

How we apply it at JCI: Meaningful creative work seeks truth, explores complexity, preserves memory, and gives voice to authentic human experience. JCI supports artists and creators who pursue their work with intellectual honesty, ethical responsibility, and a commitment to conveying ideas and stories with integrity.
